I apologize to Mr. Susman.
And I PROFUSELY thank Large Green, Strike Eagle, and WamuVoodoo, each of whom has repeatedly reminded me of the fact that the singular hallmark of Susman’s MO is the element of ‘surprise’. Gentlemen, you are absolutely correct … and I can now begin to see it clearly unfolding!
On my way home this evening, it suddenly hit me, that in a very weird sort of way, Rosen’s no running the BK show anymore. Susman is. I don’t know exactly when that incredible transformation of roles took place, but it’s a fact ... in so many ways, SG (who, not very long ago, was relegated to the very margins of this case) has become the single most instrumental force in its ultimate conclusion. And Susman’s brought this about by virtue of his having been an UNDISPUTED MASTER OF SUSPENSE. Think about it. The suspense has affected us all … even the market! It’s become so apparent that you can cut it with a knife now. Suspense (and its darker twin cousin, ‘intrigue’) are all over this BK, like a cheap suit; all as a direct result of the even weirder strategies that Susman has skillfully deployed during the past several months (i.e., first inaction, then stealth, then inaction again, then apparent assimilation, and now back to stealth).
I’d be the very first to admit that I have loudly derided all of these strategies at one time or another, as they didn’t PROPEL the case FORWARD to the successful conclusion that I wanted, nor as quickly as I wanted. How very foolish of me to have done so, as I now find myself standing back in AWE of Mr. Susman’s MASTERY… suddenly realizing (as I’m sure Rosen and the HFs have) that there is a very direct and immediate relationship between SUSPENSE and SURPRISE. The greater the suspense, the greater the consequent surprise. And suspense, like steam, takes time to build in sufficient volume so as to have sufficient FORCE. In this regard. Susman has shown himself to be not so much a mere lawyer as he is an Alfred Hitchcock who knows a good deal about human nature, as well as a thing or two about the law.
The funny thing about suspense is that it can’t exist for very long without some brave soul trying to test it. Rosen tried first with wanting to know that which PJS knew (because the suspense was killing him). And now we see the HFs, one-by-one, sticking their toes in it; wanting to know what all the suspense is about (i.e., does SG have actual evidence of our wrongful dealings). But in each of these instances Susman has successfully maintained the pressure (i.e. the lack of certainty). That’s why we’ve seen the HFs dancing about, like moths near a flame; trying to discover its essence, but not be burned in the process.
The suspense that Susman unleashed is now approaching a fever pitch. God knows how we’ve all managed to endure it thus far … but now, at last, the stage is set. The SURPRISE that surely must follow all that suspense … will blow us away.
