This is an e-mail questionaire sent to Lindy Tep as an opportunity to respond to questions regarding his plans and qualifications for the position of ASWU Financial Vice President.
Name: Lindy Tep
Majors: Accounting
Minors: None
Year: Junior
How would you propose to manage any unallocated funds next year? (Or how should the budget be different next year?)
After talking with Carl Chan, our current Financial Vice President, and sitting in on ASWU meetings, I think the most important part in managing unallocated funds is assembling a diverse finance committee. This would allow all groups at Whitworth to be represented and financial decisions be made with contributions from all groups on campus. I would like to be more engaged in getting to know the opinions on campus so that all of our decisions are made with the interest of the community in mind. Our budget may or may not be increased so every decision could affect future options for any events or clubs. My job would be to serve the Whitworth community and I just want to represent the interest of the student population respectively.
What finance-related experience would you bring to this position?
I have worked for Washington Mutual (currently Chase) as a teller for two and a half years. This experience has given me the ability to be efficient and attentive when dealing with money and any other finances. Not only did this employment sharpen my ability to remain accurate in all paper work and cash disbursement, it also gave me the opportunity to be an effective communicator with customers as well. Dealing with hundreds of clients every day is not an easy task but I have learned to be adaptable in working with individuals and to be efficient in my methods. As the Financial Vice President, I would serve Whitworth as if they were my most important client. This approach is especially important in being honest, sincere, and helpful in giving advice and answering any questions they may have over any issues regarding their investment. I would strive to properly allocate finances based on the concerns and needs of the campus.
I have also worked as a Cash Control Agent at Wild Waves Theme Park for the past two summers. My responsibilities included maintaining accurate budget reports throughout the entire park by making sure cash is distributed properly. It also helped me to develop skills in making sure all paperwork and sales were accurate. I would have to match up documents with sales and refer to their sales to make sure the whole park balanced by the end of each night. I am confident in my abilities to analyze and be attentive to details in making sure Whitworth’s money is handled accordingly.
What are the unique ideas, issues, and proposals in your campaign platform?
Given that the position of Financial Vice President has a clear set of responsibility laid out it does not leave much room for many unique ideas or proposals to be implemented. However, if I were to be elected, I would want to establish a more effective method in getting involved with organizations to help them finance their activities. With my knowledge, I would want to meet with groups whenever they would have ideas and have the opportunity to brainstorm different unique and cost-effective approaches or decide if the existing approach is the best course of action. This would help to create a better relationship
Why should we vote for you, instead of your opponent?
I have lived on campus for the last two and half years and have been engaged in a wide range of student organizations and activities. Through direct and indirect involvement in clubs and campus activities I have been able to gain a well rounded understanding of their needs and operations. I feel it is important to educate myself with the clubs and organizations around campus which are vital pieces of the culture in Whitworth Community. I have participated in many clubs such as the Hawaiian Club, Gospel Choir, and International Club which is beneficial in understanding what students on campus want. I also feel that people should vote for me because I am a friendly and easy to talk to person. I would try my best to offer whatever I can by doing things to the best of my abilities. I am committed in making sure that my duty will be one of the upmost importance by putting my best effort into making sure that everyone is included in any financial decisions that are made.
