In May 2023, PGT Trucking delivered our first shipment of low-greenhouse-gas steel via Nikola’s Class 8 battery-electric vehicle from Nucor Brandenburg to a nearby fabricator. The shipment was an example of PGT’s sustainable shipping solutions program, offering zero-emission transportation services by using the Nikola Tre BEV truck. Nucor, an industry leader in sustainable steel and steel products, hosted a commemorative event to celebrate the shipment at their new plant in Brandenburg, Kentucky, which specializes in the production of low GHG intensity steel. Company team members, media and local officials enjoyed a behind-the-scenes look at the sustainable equipment and commodities that are transforming the steel and transportation industries.
According to a study by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE), if 50% of the heavy-duty regional haul tractors were replaced with battery electric trucks, the industry could save an estimated 29.4 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.
Through the Future of Flatbed®, PGT is committed to innovative and sustainable initiatives that provide efficient, safe and environmentally friendly transportation solutions to our customers, helping us achieve our carbon emissions reduction goal. Deliveries made using the battery-electric truck are estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 40% and create a 20% savings in energy costs per trip.
