****Verizon Signs Up Lucent In $5Billion Wireless Deal
BEDMINSTER, NEW JERSEY, U.S.A., 2001 MAR 19 (NB) -- By Staff, Newsbytes. The race towards impending third-generation (3G) wireless services can mean big business for some companies. The latest example is Lucent Technologies [NYSE:LU], which has signed a three-year, $5 billion supplier deal involving Verizon Wireless' 3G high-speed mobile network infrastructure.
Verizon Wireless said it will begin deploying its first phase of 3G technology, known as cdma2000 (code division multiple access) 3G1XRTT, in its coast-to-coast network later this year.

The race is on to be the first commercial 3G system in the US. Verizon claims this will be the first 3G technology to market.

Verizon says the upgrade will "potentially" double the existing network's voice capacity and increase data-transmission speeds by nearly 10 times, with the company also deploying cdma2000 1XEV-DO, a technology reportedly compatible with existing and new base stations which enables data-only services to customers requiring even higher Internet access speeds.

Under terms of the deal, Verizon will buy a variety of products and systems from Lucent's product line, including Bell Labs-developed software that is designed to expand wireless coverage, increase capacity, and support high-speed data and mobile Internet applications.

The purchase will also include products from Lucent's 3G-ready Flexent line of mobile switching centers and base stations, Softswitch-based access and transport systems for Internet Protocol (IP) and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network applications.

According to the companies, 3G networks require high-speed data networking systems to support mobile Internet sessions at ever-increasing rates. The deal will reportedly make it possible for Verizon customers to utilize new applications requiring very high-speed data transmission.

Corning: Profits to Be Short of Forecasts

CORNING, N.Y. (Reuters) - Corning Inc. (NYSE:GLW - news), the world's biggest
maker of fiber-optic cable, said on Monday it expected its 2001 pro forma profits to fall
short of Wall Street forecasts because of slowing spending by its customers.

In a statement, Corning said it was carrying out more cost cutting, as well as considering more layoffs beyond the 825 workers
it trimmed at the start of March.

Fiber-optic cable is the backbone of modern telecommunications and the Internet. Optical equipment shares have been
pummeled this year as telecommunications companies have trimmed spending and cut production.

Corning said it expected pro forma earnings of $1.20 to $1.30 a share for the year. Its previous estimate was $1.40 to $1.43.

It estimated 2001 revenues at $8.2 billion to $8.5 billion, up 15 to 20 percent from $7.1 billion in 2000.

The company said its outlook for first-quarter profits remained 28 to 31 cents a share. Analysts expect 29 cents a share for the
first quarter and $1.36 for the full year.

``Our new outlook is based on recent customer feedback which

indicates that a meaningful recovery of spending by our telecommunications customers will occur much more slowly than we
had previously anticipated,'' President and Chief Executive John Loose said.

The company's shares were down nearly a dollar at $22.20 in pre-opening trading on the Instinet electronic broker system.
They closed on Friday at $23.18, and are down from a 12-month high of $113.2917.

Corning said its changed outlook was ``based primarily on lower expectations for the telecommunications segment amid the

current economic slowdown.''

The company said it expected 2001 revenues from photonic technologies to grow 20 to 25 percent, well below Corning's
previous expectation of 50 percent growth.

The main photonics customers are working down inventories, the statement said. Corning does not expect that market to
improve until well into the second half of the year.

Corning said it expected worldwide fiber market growth of 20 percent this year and that its own growth in fiber volume would
be in line with the market expectations.

Corning also said it expected the worldwide photonic components market to grow between 10 and 30 percent in 2001.

Happy Trades.
