Der Cannabis-Wirkstoff Cannabidiol (CBD) kann in Kombination mit anderen antiepilep­tischen Therapien die Anfallshäufigkeit bei Patienten mit bislang therapieresistentem Lennox-Gastaut-Syndrom reduzieren: so das Ergebnis einer randomisierten, doppelblinden Phase-III-Studie, die Forscher um Dr. Elizabeth Thiele vom Massachusetts General Hospital in den USA jetzt im Fachjournal »The Lancet« veröffentlichten (DOI: 10.1016/S0140-6736(18)30135-1). Das Lennox-Gastaut-Syndrom macht etwa 1 bis 4 Prozent der Epilepsie-Erkrankungen bei Kindern aus. Die ­Patienten leiden lebenslang unter schweren epileptischen Anfällen, was die kognitiven Funktionen beeinträchtigen kann. Nur 10 Prozent der Betroffenen erreichen mit den bestehenden Möglichkeiten, darunter Medikamente, ketogene Diät, Nervenstimulation und Hirnchirurgie, Anfallsfreiheit. An der 14-wöchigen Studie nahmen 171 Patienten im Alter von 2 bis 55 Jahren teil, die in den sechs Vormonaten mehrmals unterschiedliche Anfälle erlitten hatten, darunter mindestens zwei mit Stürzen. Alle galten als hochgradig therapieresistent, da sie zuvor auf mindestens sechs antikonvulsive Arzneistoffe nicht angesprochen hatten. Sie bekamen nun neben ihrer üblichen Behandlung einmal täglich 20 mg Cannabidiol pro kg Körpergewicht in pharmazeutischer Formulierung von GW Pharmaceuticals (Epidiolex) oder Placebo. Die Rate der Anfälle mit Sturzfolge reduzierte sich unter dem Cannabinoid von zuvor 71,4 pro Monat auf 31,4 pro Monat, unter Placebo von 74,7 auf 56,3 Stürze pro Monat – eine relative Risikoreduktion um 43,9 Prozent. Auch andere Anfalls­arten traten deutlich seltener auf: In der CBD-Gruppe sank die Zahl der Anfälle pro Monat von 144,6 auf 83,8, eine Reduktion um 41,2 Prozent gegenüber 13,7 Prozent in der Placebo-Gruppe (von 176,6 auf 128,7 Anfälle pro Monat). Als Nebenwirkungen traten vor allem Durchfall, Benommenheit, Fieber, verminderter Appetit und Erbrechen auf. The Company also expects authorizations for additional points of sale at new pharmacies seeking sales licenses, which should be supportive to the registered user base. Due to the increase in the number of registered users in the recreational cannabis registry over the last seven months, and the resulting expected increase in demand, the Company has informed IRCCA of the Company’s increased annual production target for dried recreational cannabis from two tonnes per year to five tonnes per year. Sales for the additional three tonnes of cannabis are subject to approval from IRCCA. The Company expects its existing greenhouse facility in San José, Uruguay, which is comprised of more than 70,000 square foot of production space, to be able to accommodate the increased production quota. Approval of New THC and CBD Levels and Pricing The Company is also pleased to announce the approval by IRCCA and Ministry of Health of new levels of recreational cannabis with THC ≤ 9% and CBD ≥ 3%.  In addition to these new levels, IRCCA has approved an increase in the sales price for dried recreational cannabis of 6.5% to U.S.$ 1.41 per gram effective January 2018.
