I believe, most of this negative amount will alone reduced from the shutoff of roaming payments in the next months

„Rakuten doesn’t disclose its payments, but using KDDI’s disclosure investors can actually back out how much Rakuten is paying in roaming charges. In the most recent quarter (Jun-Sep 2021) Rakuten paid ~36b yen (= $ 316 million) to KDDI (34% of its mobile losses of 105b). So obviously, if they can shut off this roaming payment, it will go a long way to improving mobile economics. From October, Rakuten has started to drastically reduce the KDDI roaming area in 39 prefectures by switching to its own network. Going forward, the shutoff of roaming payments should be a major driver for narrowing mobile losses.“

Reduce of the negative cash flow from operations will coming soon

„We estimate that Rakuten has paid more than JPY 30 billion to KDDI in the September quarter, which is one of the major reasons for the segment’s operating loss. We think that improvement on the segment’s loss may be the catalyst for Rakuten’s shares.“

A positive cash flow from operations will come after my estimates in third or fourth quarter of 2022 - a lot earlier than a positive net-income, because the big depreciation for the gigantic mobile investments don't reduce the cash, this big investments were done in the past after the second quarter of 2022.

Earn Rakuten Points in ways you never imagined

The poi-katsu life: Earn Rakuten Points in ways you never imagined

Spend long enough in Japan and you may witness your wallet transform into a veritable library of point cards. From your local cafe or supermarket to your favorite hair salon or English pub, loyalty programs are a staple of Japanese retail. In fact, the loyalty point love is so strong in Japan that there is a word for the very act of point hunting: poi-katsu.

Towering over Japan’s vast landscape of loyalty schemes is the Rakuten Points program. Rakuten’s loyalty offering has been consistently voted consumers’ favorite*, in part thanks to the sheer freedom granted to shoppers in spending their points. The strength and versatility of the Rakuten Ecosystem sets Rakuten apart from other service providers. And with such a wide variety of services on offer, the Rakuten Points program is essential to keeping them all unified and incentivizing customers to use as many of those services as they can.

Now, spending points is all well and good, but for poi-katsu pros, earning is the name of the game. Thankfully this is another area where Rakuten’s program excels, having issued over 2.5 trillion points (equivalent to 2.5 trillion yen, or around $22 billion USD) as of summer 2021.
Regular usage of services like Rakuten Travel or Rakuten Card will net users a consistent stream of rewards, but if you’re a budding poi-katsu enthusiast, you might find yourself interested in some of the more unexpected ways to hunt down those extra points.

Simulate investing — but with points

Starting in 2018, Rakuten members have been able to invest Rakuten Points. The service offers users a low-risk “mock investing experience” without needing to sign up for a formal securities account. Users need only choose between a “balanced” or “active” course and allocate however many points they wish to invest.
Of course, whether you earn points depends entirely on the performance of the stock market, but the initiative is clearly popular: Since launch, it has attracted over six million point aficionados — more than half aged 30 or younger.
Wander into a store

Rakuten Check is an app that rewards users for visiting physical stores and checking in. For shoppers, the service is a great place to discover new locations around the neighborhood, while stores can use the app as a marketing tool to encourage more foot traffic.
Shoppers can, of course, check in and receive points for visiting stores they were planning to visit anyway — most of Japan’s major convenience stores and many other large franchises are already registered to the platform.
Go for a stroll (if you’re 65 or above)

This one is geared more towards Japan’s senior citizens: The folks behind Rakuten Senior are using point incentives to help combat elderly isolation by improving senior IT literacy and encouraging community interaction through local workshops and fitness classes. The app also serves as a pedometer, rewarding users with Rakuten Points for reaching their daily 4,000 steps goal and stopping by participating check-in facilities.

Answer a few questions

Over two million Rakuten members are signed up to consumer research unit Rakuten Insight. The service offers regular surveys on a broad range of topics from shoppers’ attitudes towards sustainability or lifestyle changes during the pandemic, to specific questions about a certain company’s products. Point hunters need only answer a few easy questions to add to their mountain of treasure.

Hunt for bargains with your receipt
The Japanese onomatopoeia pasha! denotes the sound of a camera shutter — very fitting for bargain-hunting app Rakuten Pasha. The service’s basic function is very simple: Shoppers can earn Rakuten Points just by taking a photo of a receipt from a retail purchase. Eager point hunters can earn even more points by getting a special Tokudane coupon prior to purchase.
The app works with products from all of Japan’s major supermarkets and convenience stores, as well as from thousands of other locations. At the same time, it differs from services like Rakuten Check, Rakuten Pay and Rakuten Point Card in that individual point amounts earned (even particularly generous ones) can be applied regardless of where the purchase was made, what type of payment was used, and whether or not Rakuten Point Card was involved.
Rack up some serious points on Rakuten Ichiba

One point for every 100 yen spent on Rakuten Ichiba — this maxim has served as the foundation of Rakuten’s loyalty program since its very inception. But in recent years, the poi-katsu potential of Rakuten’s e-commerce platform has exploded, thanks in part to the beloved Super Point Up (SPU) program.

SPU lets shoppers use a number of other Rakuten services such as Rakuten Card, Rakuten Bank and Rakuten Mobile to multiply their Rakuten Ichiba point discount rate up to 15 times, with each additional service used adding to the tally. During site-wide events and promotions, rates can exceed 45 points per 100 yen — a discount that applies to all 300 million+ items available on the platform.

Most of the services taking part in the SPU program also run their own point incentives separate from Rakuten Ichiba. For Japan’s diehard point aficionados, Rakuten’s SPU program may well be the Holy Grail of poi-katsu.

Open to the world

Rakuten Mobile is making its architecture and best practices available to operators round the world through the RCP to help them replicate Rakuten Mobile’s model and success. Rakuten Mobile will not discuss customers and prospective customers at the moment, but the RCP allows customers to visit an online marketplace where they can purchase and deploy everything they want to run their private, cloud-native, virtualised 5G mobile network, regardless of where in the world they are based.

Atri elaborates: “After the infrastructure, you have the cloud and you can deploy Kubernetes or OpenStack, whichever version [of them] you want, and on top of that you have the applications and orchestration. You can design the application and manage the lifecycle.

“The BSS/OSS layer runs on top of that. OSS is more than the ordinary OSS: we offer 45 systems…You can [choose and] register your vendor digitally, register their material hardware/software services, then you can do procurement – you can raise RFPs and track them.

“You have a warehouse services, inventory management inventory across hardware and the physical-logical topology. You then you have the automation of configuration management, fault management, performance management and I could keep talking for another 45 minutes…”.

To get to this point with the RCP Atri says the team “burned through a lot of nights focusing on how to build templates and standard interfaces, so now when they meet potential operator customers the RCP knows what to ask. It doesn’t need to speak to their vendors and the usual things, it just asks them to fill in the template and we know how to integrate the application from there.”

Atri says, “With the success of Rakuten in Japan, people are getting more open, they talk to us a lot more…Coming to the business side, we really think RCP is the pivotal point where the ecosystem and the industry will change.

“I personally love our network in Japan because it’s our baby, we built it from scratch and whatever technology we are taking to the world has been tried and tested in Japan”.

Rakuten Mobile runs Open RAN and virtual RAN (vRAN) commercially to carry 4 million users’ traffic on its end-to-end cloud network. He states, “[We] are managing the first realistic CI/CD [continuous integrated/continuous deployment] pipeline of automation where you have auto-rollbacks and upgrades when you’re talking about the [biggest] number of edge clouds for a telecom network anywhere in the world, where you’re talking about having shifted everything from bare metal to a cloud-native approach on VNFs.”

Michael Tamblyn, President and CEO of Rakuten Kobo

19.01.22 13:13
Rakuten Kobo is the perfect company for the intellectually restless. It is located at the intersection of so many technology and society’s current major themes: E-Commerce; brick and mortar retail; mobile phone; digital assets; hardware; and D2C and B2B. Much was discussed about international and regulatory nuances, supply chains and manufacturing, culture, content production, publishers and writers, moderation, curation, and censorship. Above all, I have a 500-person “born hybrid” company that has built a great culture with telecommuters around the world and has offices in Toronto, Dublin, Darmstadt and Taipei.

In all industries, about 20% of companies have suffered badly, and they do. About 60 percent do or will stay the same, and the remaining 20 percent had a product or service that people wanted or needed during a pandemic. We were lucky enough to be in that latter segment. It turns out that many people want to escape or the depth of understanding offered by books.

There was a disruption in the book industry between the author and the publisher. About 25 percent of the books we sell don’t have a publisher, and the customer doesn’t care. The book they bought had received excellent grades, excellent reviews, and it fell into the category they liked. Self-published books are on our bestseller lists and regularly go more than similar books by traditionally published authors. They are written and published by individual independent writers who contract with their own editors, hire their own cover designers, outsource marketing and do everything themselves. Can you imagine how much anxiety would exist in the music or video industry if 25 percent of consumption is produced in garages outside the traditional studio system?

Connected TV will take its share of advertising

Connected TV will take its share of the advertising pie

The opinion of Marc Herbault, Media & Display Director of Rakuten Advertising

Connected TV (CTV) will continue to grow in 2022, with many households opting for smart devices. Even if most French people continue to consume TV via box operators, more and more go directly to their Smart TV (36%, an increase of 7%). This will accelerate in 2022, with the arrival of more and more applications and content. Brands and agencies are increasingly aware of the opportunity offered to them by TVC to reach consumers who do not or no longer watch traditional broadcasts. A CTV strategy thus makes it possible to play on complementarity with traditional TV plans, but also to bring quality to a VOL strategy on the most beautiful screen in the home with the finesse of digital targeting.

Massive Rakuten Advertising-Präsenz in APAC

Tackling affiliate marketing’s reputation problem in APAC

By Stuart McLennan - January 11, 2022

Asia Pacific has been slower to adopt affiliate marketing than the United States and Europe, but the region is gradually catching up as many brands and partners opt for a pay-on-performance approach, writes Stuart McLennan, senior vice-president for APAC at Rakuten Advertising.

Affiliate marketing has a reputation problem. If you think affiliate marketing is focused on discounts or less-premium brands, you are not alone. But the adoption and scale of the channel globally highlight the flaws in this way of thinking. Take Japan as an example; its sub-affiliate networks are well-established, with a projected value of affiliate marketing of $5bn by 2023.

China – a nation with the most internet users in the world – has an over 40% share of the global affiliate marketing industry. And Australia is now a hot bed for publisher innovation to rival that seen in the UK and the US.

Cross-pollination has been happening significantly between the mobile business and the rest of Rakuten ecosystem. Mickey has stated:

“There have been more contributions to the ecosystem than we initially thought. In fact, so beneficial that we had to ask ourselves if it was real”

Rakuten has the numbers to back this up. Consider: 19% of new mobile sign-ups (March to September 2020) were by users who had never previously used any Rakuten service. These users, within 6-12 months of signing up to mobile,

• 1 in 3 users started using Ichiba (marketplace) for the first time;

• 1 in 5 users signed up for a Rakuten credit card;

• 1 in 9 users became an online banking customer;

• 1 in 10 users started using Rakuten’s other payments solutions;

This is quite impressive - it means between 33 to 74% (depending on the overlap of cohorts above) of new mobile users were directed into the Rakuten ecosystem for the first time. What’s also impressive is when we look at new mobile subscribers who were already existing Rakuten users - after signing up for mobile, these existing users increased their purchase value on Ichiba marketplace by 60%. It looks to me that the synergy is well quantified and significant.

Der Unterschied zu Jeff Bezos

20.01.22 10:20

Ikigai

Open RAN Networks Enabling 5G with Standalone Core Takes Off

The ultrafast speeds of 5G, excessive bandwidth and coffee latency are opening a plethora of recent alternatives and complicated programs, reworking industries from production and healthcare, to Web of Issues (IoT), digital fact, and gaming, the probabilities are unending.

In line with the Aggressive Carriers Affiliation (CCA), the U.S. Executive and business stakeholders are targeted at the essential want to make sure that speedy 5G deployments national. Analysis and modeling from a number of economists and companies align to element the large affect 5G may have on our economic system and activity introduction, together with contributing up to $1.5 trillion to U.S. GDP and developing 4.5 million jobs.

Cell Community Operators (MNOs) have two techniques of supporting 5G. The Non-standalone usual makes use of present LTE RAN and core networks as an anchor, with the addition of a 5G part service. Non-Standalone will lock MNOs in with their present distributors because the interfaces don’t seem to be open and interoperable.

5G Standalone (SA) makes use of cloud-based and Provider-Primarily based Structure (SBA) that optimizes community infrastructure with virtualized community purposes (VNFs), enabling operators to release differentiated services and products, making sure a better high quality of carrier. 5G SA Open RAN networks are perfect for new programs and can be deployed an increasing number of in 2022 and past as they supply ultra-reliable, lower-latency communications, permitting extra other people and units to make use of cell information on the identical time, thus enabling true 5G connectivity.

O2 / Telefónica has activated Germany's first mini-radio cells with Open RAN technology in Munich.

As the first German network operator, O2 / Telefónica has activated the first mini-radio cells with innovative Open RAN technology (ORAN) in Munich. In addition to the very well developed O2 network, this will provide all O2 customers with even more capacity and higher bandwidths at busy locations in the future. The installation of pure 5G Open RAN mini radio cells ("5G standalone") will follow later in the year. With the compact, flexibly deployable latest-generation mini mobile cells, the company is able to increase 5G/4G capacities in the O2 network at high-traffic locations in urban areas faster than before. The mini-radio cells, attached to a building facade on Klenzestraße in Munich's Gärtnerplatz district, supplement the 4G/5G mobile network installed on rooftops in the city center, but do not replace it.

European Telcos Alarm Over Open RAN Progress

European Telcos Sound Alarm Over Flagging Open RAN Progress

Deutsche Telekom, Orange, and others warn the continent is falling behind the U.S. and Japan

MICHAEL KOZIOL
21 DEC 2021

European telecom companies recently sounded an alarm that they may be falling behind the rest of the world in their efforts to develop open-interface radio access network (RAN) technologies. The technologies, called Open RAN and which would provide new ways to mix and match network components by “opening up” the interfaces between them, are widely believed to be an important opportunity to drive down the costs of network deployments and allow new players to enter a rigid market.

Five companies—Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, and Vodafone—published a report outlining why they feel Europe as a whole is lagging behind other regions such as the U.S. and Japan in developing Open RAN.

Open RAN surprised some in the industry with how quickly it has risen to prominence. The O-RAN Alliance was founded in 2018 with just five members. It now has over 260 members. Cellular “generations” such as 4G and 5G typically exist on a ten-year cycle of research, standardization, and commercialization. Open RAN is moving much faster, and even despite the recent concerns about lagging behind—or perhaps because of them—there is still a sense in the industry that Open RAN will make a big impact in the coming years.
