NEW YORK, May 25 (newratings.com) - Dell Inc (DELL.NAS), the world's second-largest personal-computer company, Thursday said it will start selling personal computers through Wal-Mart Stores Inc in North America stating June 10.

The move is a shift from Dell’s 23-year direct sale model, which involved manufacturing computers on order for customers, and marks the first time the Round Rock, Texas-based company has ventured into large-scale retail. About 3,500 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico will sell two models of the company’s desktop computers in a bundled package for less than $700, Wal-Mart Stores said. The retail giant added that one of the models would be an "exclusive Dell Dimension Multimedia Desktop Computer."The move to expand in retail stores was prompted by Dell’s need to compete effectively with Hewlett-Packard Co, which has overtaken the former company as the world's leading PC maker partly through its strategy of selling PCs in the US through major retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores, Best Buy Co and Circuit City Stores Inc. Dell spokesman, Dwayne Cox, said, "We've been saying that we've been looking at new and efficient ways for new distribution. This is the first step in our growing global retail strategy."
