Mary will Zeugen, Vereidigungen, Docs etc. ;-)
Even to J.P. MorganJPM +2.74%, $11 billion is no small chunk of change.
The new amount being discussed in a potential settlement, which includes payments to borrowers, would be far bigger than any fine the bank has paid and would likely settle many claims against it, if it can be reached.
Here is some context for how big the fine would be.
1.7x– The settlement total would be 1.7 times the bank’s $6.5 billion profit in the second quarter.
42% – The total would be about 42% of the revenue for the bank during the quarter.
1.8x – The London whale trade that has been the epicenter of many troubles for the bank since April 2012 has cost the bank more than $6 billion in losses. This would be nearly two of those whales.
80% – Bernstein analysts estimated earlier this month the bank had set aside about $21 billion in legal reserves since 2009, including about $2 billion the analysts expect the bank to add in the third quarter. Bernstein estimated the bank has taken about $6 billion in settlements out of those reserves and then the bank announced $1.3 billion in other settlements, which would leave it with about $14 billion. The bank doesn’t disclose its current total legal reserves.
0.451% – The fine is a fraction of a percent of J.P. Morgan’s $2.44 trillion in total assets, the amount that makes it the biggest bank in the country.
3.5x – The settlement would be 3.5 times the amount J.P. Morgan paid for Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual in 2008. The bank ultimately paid $1.2 billion for Bear and $1.9 billion for Washington Mutual’s banking operations, though it also took other liabilities and assets on.
$576,671 – The amount the bank would need to withdraw from every one of its 19,075 ATMs. It would need to withdraw $1.94 million from every one of its 5,657 branches if it decided to try the teller instead.
13% – The settlement would be 13% of the Federal Reserve’s monthly $85 billion bond in purchases. It would also be just 13% of the total $85 billion in so-called sequester cuts that went into place at the start of the year and have been the center of Washington’s budget battles.
0.07% – The fraction of the U.S.’s $16.74 trillion in total outstanding debt, meaning J.P. Morgan isn’t likely to help much there.
